Trainer chasing career high in The Beauford with former winner of the race

Torrens has already provided trainer Marc Chevalier with his biggest career win but the talented stayer is in line to top it when he chases a second $300,000 The Beauford (2300m) win at Newcastle this Saturday.

Torrens won The Beauford in 2021 when he was conditioned by Lauri Parker before being purchased by a client of Chevalier’s as he was beginning his own training journey.

The son of Cox Plate hero Adelaide has since delivered Chevalier his first stakes winner in last year’s Christmas Cup but would provide an even more lucrative payday in The Beauford.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Chevalier said.

“He is pretty fit now. He has obviously had five weeks between runs but is slightly back in trip so that’s not going to worry him and he has been keeping fresh.

“It’s a good gate for him and I expect he should race well.”

Jenny Duggan rode Torrens to his win in The Beauford two years ago and will look to replicate the display this weekend where he is a $19 TAB chance.

Torrens comes into the race on the back of his best run this preparation with a fourth behind Land Legend in the St Leger (2600m) on The Everest day last month.

“Two of the horses that finished in front of him have won with Cleveland winning the Moonee Valley Gold Cup and Kalapour winning the Archer Stakes so it’s really good form,” Chevalier said.

“He was a bit unlucky to be stuck behind a horse that was dying on his run but looking at his sectionals, he ran the fastest last 400m of the race so we were really happy.

“With a bit more luck he might have run third or even challenge the second horse.

“He is a seven-year-old stallion, it takes him a few runs to get fit. He gets quite heavy but he is fit now and if he repeats that run in the St Leger he is definitely a winning chance.”

Chevalier plans to defend the Christmas Cup crown Torrens claimed last year if all goes to plan following The Beauford.

“The plan will be to go and try and win the Christmas Cup again next start,” he said.

“He won it last year and then we start making plans for next year.”
